Frequently Asked Questions
What will a dental x-ray show?
X-rays can show a lot of things that the eye might not see by just looking directly in the mouth. From decay under a filling, or between teeth to whether you have an infection in the root of your tooth and how severe it might be. X-rays done on children can show any teeth that haven't grown out yet, and let the dentist examine and determine if there will be any complications when it eventually does come out. In adults, it can show wisdom teeth that might be impacted and may need to be removed, before they cause any problems in the future.
How do I keep my teeth and gums healthy?
It is easy to get your mouth clean and healthy, and keep it that way. A simple routine of brushing and cleaning between the teeth, good eating habits and regular dental check-ups can help prevent most dental problems. Although most people brush regularly, many don't clean between their teeth and some people don't have dental check-ups. A few small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference in the long run. Your dentist or dental hygienist can remove any build-up on your teeth and treat any gum disease that has already appeared. But daily dental care is up to you, and the main weapons are the toothbrush and interdental cleaning (cleaning between the teeth).
How does smoking affect my teeth and gums?
Smokers are more likely to rapidly develop bacterial plaque than non-smokers, which leads to gum disease. When you smoke, it causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, leading to infected gums failing to heal. Gum disease still remains the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.
Is there anything that can help me with my fear of the dentist?
Yes. Some people are so nervous and frightened of visiting a dentist that they will not even go for a basic dental cleaning, leading to possible serious problems in the future. They can overcome these fears though the sedation process. Dentists today are sympathetic about your fears so definitely ask about this procedure and how it all works.
